Quillwort · preview coming soon

Point it at a shelf.

Take one photo of a bookshelf. Quillwort reads every spine it can see, ranks the books against your own taste, and points each one back to its spot in your photo — so the last step is reaching out and pulling it down.

Every one points back to your photo.

The findings list after a scan, each book scored out of 100 against the reader's taste and sorted best match first. The shelf photo magnified on a single book, its spine outlined in gold where it sits on the shelf.

How it works

One photo, three steps.

01 · Photograph

Scan a shelf

In a bookstore, at a library sale, in front of a friend's bookcase — take one photo, or upload one from your library. Nothing to type, nothing to aim spine by spine.

The Quillwort home screen, headed “Point it at a shelf”, with the button that opens the camera.

02 · Rank

Ranked to your taste

Tap "AI recommended" and every book it named is scored out of 100 against your own reading — with one sentence, written to you, about why.

“Worth a second look”: the ranked findings list, each entry carrying a match score and a sentence explaining it.

03 · Locate

Find it on the shelf

Tap a book and your photo opens zoomed onto that exact spine, outlined in gold. Look up, find it, pull it down. That's what the whole thing is for.

Personal match

Fit, not fame.

The score isn't a star rating or a bestseller list. It's how well a book fits you, judged only against your own taste — a famous classic that's wrong for you scores low, and an obscure book that's right for you scores high.

  • Your taste comes from your Goodreads history, topics you reach for, and books you'd read again. Goodreads is the fastest way in — never required.
  • Quillwort writes your portrait in plain English. You can read exactly what the ranking thinks of you, and remove anything that isn't right.
  • Every score carries a reason, written to you: "Why it found you."
  • When a spine couldn't be read well enough, it says "Not yet ranked" — it won't guess.

A scan in progress: the found and named counters climbing while real titles arrive one by one.

While it works

A wait worth watching.

A big shelf takes a minute or more to read, and Quillwort doesn't pretend otherwise. Instead of a spinner, you watch it work: books outlined in your photo as they're found, two counters climbing, real titles arriving one by one.

  • Walk away whenever you like — "Leave this open or don't, we'll bring you back." The scan waits with the rest of your scans.
  • If the photo came out too unclear to read, it says so plainly — "That's down to the photo, not your shelf" — and the retake is free.

Privacy

Who sees what, plainly.

No other reader can see your scans. Quillwort's operators can open them, in our own administration tool.

The camera is used only when you choose to photograph a shelf or scan a friend's code.

Quillwort never receives your Goodreads password — the import reads a file you download yourself.

Delete a scan and its photo is gone from our storage within 9 days. Your whole account can be deleted from inside the app.

Questions

Asked, answered.

Does it read every book on the shelf?
It names the books whose spine lettering comes through clearly. Worn, tiny, angled or hidden spines may be missed — and when a photo read badly, the app says so and offers a free retake.
Do I need Goodreads?
No. Goodreads is the fastest way to fill in your taste — years of ratings in one import — but you can build your compass from topics you type and books you'd read again. Quillwort never asks for your Goodreads password.
What does the match score mean?
How much you would want this book, out of 100, judged only against your own taste. 50 is neutral; 85 and up is kept for books it's confident you'd love. It measures fit, not quality or fame.
Is it instant?
No — a big shelf takes a minute or more, and the first scan after a quiet spell adds about a minute while the readers wake. You watch it work, and you can walk away; the scan waits with the rest of your scans.
Does it work offline?
Reading and ranking happen online. If your connection drops mid-scan, the scan keeps going and waits for you, but it needs a connection to finish.
